Holi”DAY”

Ok now is when I keep it real.  I’ve talked about the helpful hints for the holiday and now I want to emphasize the meaning of the DAY in holiday.

So often people use the entire week to celebrate a holiday.  You know what?  That is just another one of those cooky comfortable excuses people like to use for over indulging.   Don’t do it.

Wallowing in several days of poor food choices can set you back by a couple of weeks.  Yes, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.  If you are going to start stuffing your face three days before the holiday and eat leftovers for three days after the holiday, you bet your fine-looking booty you will cost yourself two weeks worth of workouts in the gym.  

It’s a HOLIDAY.  Singular.  One day.  Behave.

That was one of the lessons I learned in the hard-fought battle to get and stay fit.  You don’t need a week to celebrate a day.  Yes, the options will be there, work, multiple family outings, etc.  I do realize that not everyone has the luxury to eat at one place so don’t get all up in a twist. 

Step back and look at your schedule and think about it a little ahead of time.  You can make better choices than to consider each gathering a grubfest.  I love food, I know what a grubfest is.  Remember, no appetizers, no nibbles. 

If you have grown kids, send the leftovers with them.  They will appreciate them more than you will.

Enjoy time spent with your family, even the cooky ones.  Someday you will look around and realize that even the cooky ones make the days special.

Scales and What Not

No, not fish scales.  Weight scales.

I work with so many women regarding weight-loss and fitness.  I’ve talked about scale weight before and how it fits in the big scheme of things.

If I could somehow be Glenda the Good Witch for just one day, I swear I’d love to banish all scales from the land! 

Have I ever told you guys the story of going to our company “health-fair”?  I consider myself pretty fit in the big scheme of averages so the health fair didn’t deter me.  They checked both my good and bad cholesterol and both were impeccable.  My blood pressure was also in the very good category. 

So off I go the new super-duper body mass index machine.  To use the machine you must be in your sock feet.  I took off my shoes and when it was my turn, I jumped up on that bad boy only to receive this little ticker tape print out showing that I was by American standards “obese”.  I literally laughed out loud. 

One of the guys I workout with was right behind me.  He 26 years old, six feet tall and has six-pack abs.  Yes, I saw them during a workout class.   You know what?  His BMI put him in the obese category as well.  I was already skeptical about our BMI standards anyway, but that pushed it over the top.  The number one reason is that the technician never bothered to ask either of us if we work out on a regular basis.  There is a different selection for athletes.  Either way bad data.

Anyway, back to where I was going with all of this.  Data is just data.  It’s not a sign of success or failure, it’s a number.  It is what we do with that number that matters. 

If you struggle with getting on the scale to gather data then it’s time to ask yourself  “why does this number matter so much to me?”.

What should really matter to you is if you are doing better today than you did yesterday.  If you strive every single day to be a better person, whether it’s in your workouts, your finances, your savings, keeping your kids clothes clean and helping someone else out in some small way.  You are moving forward.

Progress isn’t about what’s happening on the outside.  It’s about what’s happening on the inside.  When you figure out why you wrap success or failure around a number, changes begin to happen.  You stop paying so much attention to the scale and to your appearance and start focusing on your workouts, how consistent you are, and if you are doing them correctly from a technical standpoint.  Suddenly your body image starts to improve as does your ability.

One of the most refreshing things I’ve read lately was Lifting My Spirits about page and reading that she went on stage to compete in her first bodybuilding show without even caring what her BF% was.  She just new by looking in the mirror and by doing the right things with her workouts and food that results were there.  And that’s how this should be.

Do the right things and results will come.

Getting Fit! Tami Rose

I’d like to take a moment to introduce you to a woman I know.  I met Tami a year ago when she joined the CrossFit Box I attend. 

With her permission, this blog is for her.  To celebrate the victory of consistency with both her nutrition and her workouts.  Tami has made changes that have now become visible results.  No super secret code or plan. 

Clean conscious eating and working out.  I do not train Tami.  She works out at CrossFit Impulse.  She does this on her own with the support of other CrossFit community members, friends and trainers at the box.

For all of you out there struggling, use this as motivation. 

Instead of me saying a thousand words, I’ll let the photo’s do the talking.  Congratulations Tami!

It’s Not About the Weight

Only DataI think back on the number of times I jumped on the scale and waited with held breath for that thing to tell me something I considered good.  And I remember the days I didn’t perceive the results as positive.  It took me several years to figure out that the scale is simply a data gathering tool. 

Have realistic expectations.  In the beginning I literally thought I could lose over 150# in 3 months.  Yes, I was that naiveHaving or showing a lack of experience, judgement or information.  

My personal experience , which I am elated to share with you is that it takes more time than most women are willing to invest in themselves but that doesn’t have to be YOU.  

YOU can choose to be one of those women that resets your mind and commits to long-term success as opposed to a short-sighted solution. 

Women in general give so much credit and power to the scale that they will literally throw away months of hard work and effort if that scale doesn’t tell them what they want to hear.  I’ve been there.  The scale does not dictate your success or perceived failure.  STOP doing that to yourself!!

There are so many other things you are changing with fitness and clean eating.  

– Your body is getting healthier inside. 

– Your soul is happier because YOU are taking care of YOU and not waiting around for someone else to do it for you.

– You are gaining self-confidence with each workout and each clean meal you choose to eat.

– You can overcome set-backs.

– You are opening yourself up to new experiences.

– You are opening yourself to meeting new people.

– You can control your weight, your food and the outcome of both.

– You can trust and believe in YOU!

The Morphing of a Fit Woman

People in the gym see me and most would never know that I weighed 328# at one point in my life.   Most days I don’t think about where I came from just because I don’t live in the past.  I prefer to keep my eyes peeled on what’s happening today. 

That way I see more of the good stuff.  Worrying about tomorrow before it gets here solves nothing.  Hanging on to crap that happened in the past only serves to keep me there so I tend to let yesterday go and live in today.

Ever looked up the definition of morphing? 

  • Undergo or cause to undergo a gradual transformation: “it began as an online magazine and morphed into a book”.

This suits me perfectly. Gradual transformation.  What started out as a seemingly impossible task has become a reality.   From fat to fit.  I used to bristle at the term fat for fear of hurting someone’s feelings.  

The truth is I WAS FAT and I blamed it on everyone and everything.  Bad  divorce, hated my job, not enough money, I had three kids, I was too busy to go to the gym, my knee’s hurt (ya think??  what body part doesn’t hurt when you pack 170# of excess weight on it?).   In reality, I was scared.  What if I failed.  What if I didn’t follow through.  What if I didn’t stay with it.  Notice I never said “what if I can’t”.  Subconsciously, I always knew that I could and I would.  Where I got into trouble was wanting major results all the time.  I’ve learned that the minor changes are just as important. 

It’s in the details.  We lose ourselves in where we want to be instead of what it takes to get there.   My best progressions have come when I stopped focusing on when I get “there” and started wholeheartedly focusing my attention on where I am and what I can do to be better today than I was yesterday.

It’s not easy, but I promise you when you get “there”, you’ll move the bar to somewhere else.     That’s morphing. 

Gradual transformation is difficult mainly because of our instant gratification society.   For me, gradual transformation has forced me to embrace the journey. It’s the journey that makes it possible to endure the necessary sacrifices to achieve any goal worth having.
